A writer of things.

Stuff I do. Stuff I like. Stuff I think about.

A bunch of things I liked in 2018

My 2018 Goodreads reading challenge was set at 18. I read 16. I’m a failure. How the fuck do people write books, read books, watch TV, see movies, listen to podcasts, and have lives all at the same time?

I don’t know. But these were my favorite books of the bunch. All pretty much leveled me in different ways.

This came out in 2017, but I don’t care. It was remarkable.

I did not watch enough movies in 2018. Failed there too. I saw 86. Last year I saw 117. I need to fix that in 2019. There were so many movies released in 2018 that I’m sure I’ll enjoy, but didn’t get a chance to see: If Beale Street Could Talk, Burning, Support the Girls, Eighth Grade, First Man, Leave No Trace, and a bunch more. The best movie I saw in 2018 was Spielberg’s The Post, but that was released at the tail-end of 2017 for awards nonsense. I watched it 4 times. It’s a masterpiece.

Of the ones I did see (and were released in 2018), I liked these most:

I could not stop listening to “Forget Me Not” by Brian Fallon. It’s a wonderfully catchy tune that just clicked with me.

Here’s my yearly list of the few hundred songs I dug. It’s all over the map.

I live in the future. So this is a list of 100 songs that Spotify’s robots said I listened to most. They’re probably right. Because they’re robots, I guess.

Joe Pera Talks with You was the biggest surprise for me. It’s unique, sincere, authentic, absurd, and heartbreaking. I love it so much. The season finale made me cry. Very few people I talk to seem to have seen it and I cannot recommend it enough. I sure hope it’s coming back for another season.

I’m also a huge fan of The Good Place. It’s brilliantly crafted. I don’t know how it keeps one-upping itself, but it does. Homecoming was pretty incredible. Best direction and music cues of the year. I was pretty crazy about The Haunting of Hill House too. Dug that dysfunction. So nice to see horror used to explore very real shit. And Sharp Objects is one of those shows that I would put in the “made for me” category. It checks all the boxes. Plus, Billions. Billions is so great. The sillier it gets, the more I like it.

I am a hip human who refuses to experience one moment of silence in his life, therefore I listen to podcasts. The Best Show is (and always will be) the literal best show. Nothing tops Tom, Jon, AP Mike, and the rest of the crew. But I also dug Slow Burn (the Nixon season) and The RFK Tapes. And I listen to The Daily daily. It’s fantastic.

Okay. That’s enough. Have a good 2019. You’ll be hearing a lot more from me this year. Promise.
